Marilyn Middlemiss

Painting, drawing, installation and sound, with a conceptual origin. The work is minimal and still, the paintings and drawings can be difficult to read and demand time to be spent with them. The sound work relates to the painting practice in that sound is an abstract language as non-representative painting can be. Colour plays an important part in the work and Cornwall inspires with its light and drama. This new work has a strong landscape base, as it is work inspired by the Pool at Hayle.

Exhibition statement

This body of work entitled "History Absorbed" was inspired by my moving to Copperhouse, Hayle, which has a rich industrial heritage andis one of the most beautiful unspoilt parts of Cornwall.

Look at the view from the gallery, walk to the most spectacular beach over the dunes. Although this work is painted in my own abstract minimal way representation is evident, mostly by the colour which was inspired by the scoria which our houses are made of. The black stuff is all that remains of the copper smelting and that grand hundred years of industrial success that Hayle enjoyed, but behind this is a beauty that nature has reclaimed and even absorbed. I have made this work with a passion for this place.
