| Michael's
newest collection of work has moved him into the digital era whilst retaining
a painterly energy and quality emphasised by its relation to
the Renaissance form and colour. Bacchus and Ariadne is just one of his new works that aims to give the imagination a space to rest, as the images hover somewhere between the abstract and the figurative; between the real and the imagined. For a long time, Michael has been interested by the simultaneous nature some objects hold. The idea that whilst they are themselves, they too can point toward another thing at the same time. I want the image to find a relationship with the materials it is made from, so you can accept both at the same time; simultaneously a piece of cloth and a reference or pointer to other things not directly in the image, says Donnelly. The simplistic, yet beautiful digital paintings feature cloth, which has been dyed to re-create the colours of particular Renaissance paintings. The essence of these paintings have then been transposed into a photographic print. Michael is known for his highly accurate and sensitive paintings. This new development of his work has moved him into the digital era with a painterly energy and quality emphasised by his use of renaissance forms. We are delighted to be the first to show this very important work by an extremely important artist who lives and works in Cornwall. Marilyn Middlemiss The salt gallery |
