| CANARY
IN THE ATTIC
Canary in The Attic relates to a state of mind that follows loss. The canary is used as a metaphor for highly sensitive individuals who overly absorb what is going on in their environment to the point of destruction. The work speaks of loss in terms of the disintegration of memory and how with time things start to fade, crumble and turn to dust. The projection, a shadow of a canary in a small cage, reflects this sense of loss in the way that it is an after image of something that no longer exists, which according to the amount of light in the room drifts in and out of focus. The work collectively has a strong reference to Victorian literary works such as The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman where the central female character slowly starts to loose her mind while confined in an Attic. |
