Once More,
with Feeling
Work in
progress by Lizzie Ridout informed by 57 Fore Street's previous existence
as Hayle Kindergarten and Preparatory School. This work explores the
theme of learning and repetition: repetition as echoes, repetition
as commitment, repetition as control, as labour, as meditation, as
punishment and as repentance.
Conversations with former pupils of Hayle Kindergarten and Preparatory
School early on in the project, inspired thoughts around the theme
of rote. Learning by rote is examined through a series
of repetitive acts, both by the artist and by the viewer. Information
is memorized, transformed or lost through a variety of processes.
However, concurrently, by re-presenting this past in an altered context
and form, another generation also becomes privy to a version of this
story. And so it continues.
Once More, with Feeling is an opportunity to create an archival document
for Hayle Kindergarten and Preparatory School, where there currently
is none. Names will be employed as a simple means to remember a collective
past. The handwriting of the participants becomes both a reflection
of fundamental rules drummed into us from a young age and a conscious
decision to relieve ourselves of those same conventions.
A document will be created throughout the duration of the show by
visitors, compiled at its close and 'bequeathed' to the Salt Gallery.
Part of this document will take the form of a limited
edition book chronicling the development of the work within the exhibition
and conversations held between the artist, former pupils at the school
and gallery visitors.
All former pupils of the Hayle Kindergarten and Preparatory School
are invited to visit the gallery and encouraged to have themselves
and their peers remembered. Lizzie Ridout will be in the gallery space
on Tuesdays from 10am til 1pm and Saturdays from 2pm til
5pm for the duration of the show and would like to speak to pupils
about their memories..
