Kaori Tatebayashi

My whole life has been closely connected to ceramics, from the village in Japan where I was born, which is known for its fine porcelain, to the place we then moved to (Kyoto) which is also noted for its pottery. My childhood playground was the pottery factory where I was allowed to sit mesmerized, watching the craftsmen throwing, oblivious to time passing. My family also has its connections to the ceramics industry, my Grandfather as a buyer for his own wholesale business and my mother worked as a china painter.
Unconsciously this grounding led me to understand the nature of ceramics, its fragility and permanence and its ability to capture moments. Once the clay is fired time is trapped within the material. In my work I try to preserve the most personal and transient recollections of our lives. I seal them within the clay, which is then transformed into a permanent representation of memory
