Statement

I combine immediately recognisable motifs (boats, trees, animals etc) with abstract structures to explore and compress the shallow space between illusion and surface.
The work is an object, something that has a physical presence. The marks made on its surface should not be over confident and have the feel of the untrained, helping shrink the pictorial depth and give an impression of something just out of reach.
The subject is that of our collective subconscious, primordial memories and places of a distant childhood. Lakes, forests, harbour’s and the colouring’s of the earth sea and sky bring a sort of familiarity to the work, somewhere we can believe in that does not actually exist.
